2 accused of selling drugs to high school students

Two individuals who allegedly sold drug-laced gummy worms to high school students are now in custody, according to the Gulfport Police Department. The two were arrested after students from Boca Ciega High School who had eaten the gummy worms were taken to a local hospital. When Florida residents are accused of selling drugs, they do not have to fight these charges alone.

The candies were supposedly mixed with THC — marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient — authorities claim. One high school student brought the drugs to school, after which she distributed them to two others who, in turn, distributed them to four more of their classmates, police said. A 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy have already been arrested, and a third arrest is pending.

Authorities were notified of the drug-laced candy once two students sought medical attention from the school nurse. A resource officer confiscated a piece of the candy, and, according to police, it smelled like marijuana. Five students consumed the candies, and all were checked out at a local hospital, police say.

Of those arrested, the three who distributed the drug-laced candies will be facing criminal charges, while the others will be facing penalization from the school, police said. However, neither individual has actually been convicted of anything, and, at this point, the charges are nothing more than formal accusations. It will be up to a Florida criminal court to determine the accused individuals’ innocence or guilt. As selling drugs can have harsh consequences for a person of any age, these students will likely take these charges seriously and may choose to consult experienced criminal defense attorneys.
