Florida woman arrested, accused of drug possession

A 24-year-old Florida woman was recently arrested for allegedly possessing drugs. The Sebring woman was arrested after she was stopped for a moving violation on a recent Tuesday afternoon in April. When Florida residents are accused of similar drug possession charges, they rarely choose to fight the charges alone.

A deputy on duty enforcing traffic laws on a local boulevard saw the woman's van appear, a report said. Based on the fact that the deputy knew that the female driver of the van's license was suspended, he followed the vehicle to a local plaza. At this point, the deputy claims the van began driving around the plaza's parking lot in an unpredictable manner.

Eventually, the van reportedly came to a stop, at which point the deputy asked the driver what she was doing. When the deputy asked her for her ID and inquired as to whether there was anything illegal within the vehicle, the woman reportedly looked at her purse and started crying, saying "I don't want to go to jail." After a search of the vehicle, two glass pipes that had a crystal-like substance -- which later tested positive for methamphetamine -- were allegedly uncovered. Four pills that were later discovered as Xanax were also discovered, according to the police.

The prosecution will have the burden of proving these drug possession charges beyond a reasonable doubt in a Florida criminal court. The serious nature of the allegations mandate that the defendant focus on the specifics of the charges. The nature of the original traffic stop, as well as the procedures employed by the law enforcement officer before and after the arrest, may warrant close scrutiny. Moreover, the specific location of the drugs and firearms within the vehicle may also play an important role in the defense strategy of the accused individual.
