Sebring man arrested on drug possession allegations

The number of drug overdose incidents is on the rise in Florida. Police drug enforcement divisions of many city, state and nationwide agencies have responded by leading investigations and cracking down on the drug trade. A recent search for an individual with a warrant out for their arrest led to a separate, unrelated arrest for drug possession

According to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest was made recently in Sebring. A 38-year-old man was arrested and is now facing drug charges related to possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, and various charges related to an intent to sell or deliver drugs. At the time of the arrest, he allegedly possessed over 14 grams of methamphetamine, among other illegal drugs.

While seeking to execute the warrant, deputies claim to have smelled marijuana within a residence. That prompted a search by a drug dog, which resulted in discovering drugs in two different locations in the house. Besides finding a variety of drugs — methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription drugs and anabolic steroids — they also discovered scales, ledgers and small plastic bags.

The accused individual is entitled by law to a criminal defense, including representation by an attorney during the pending Florida legal proceedings. Drug possession charges, especially those involving an intent to sell, come with potentially severe penalties should a conviction ultimately be secured. Nevertheless, the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution contains important safeguards against unreasonable searches and seizures, which may be a focal point for defense counsel in preparing a defense to the current accusations.
