Several charged with drug possession after Fort Myers bust

Drug crimes can be punished very severely in Florida if there is a conviction. Penalties may include large fines, lengthy prison sentences and driver’s license suspension. After a recent bust here in Fort Myers, several people face these potential consequences after being charged with drug possession and other crimes. Their arrests stem from a three month-long investigation conducted by deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrests were made on Jan. 29 after deputies carried out what they called “Operation Coastal Flush” in the Suncoast Estates community. Three homes in the community were searched after warrants were obtained. Between the three locations, deputies allegedly seized 159 grams of marijuana, six grams of cocaine and 106 grams of prescription drugs. In total, the narcotics purportedly had a street value of $12,200.

A total of 22 people were arrested, though some were charged with prostitution and not drug crimes. The accused that were arrested for alleged drug-related crimes face charges such as possession, intent to sell and trafficking. According to reports, several more individuals are expected to be taken into custody and charged with drug-related offenses.

Operations of this nature are generally well investigated and those arrested are vigorously prosecuted. However, here in Florida, as with anywhere else in our nation, anyone accused of a crime is innocent unless or until they are found guilty. Each of the accused would do well to seek representation with experience in defending against drug possession charges and other violations. Not only will this ensure that their rights are upheld, but it may also help each of them obtain the best possible outcome in their individual cases.
