Gainesville resident faces drug possession charge

The prospect of fighting a Florida drug charge, much less the public scrutiny, may seem daunting. Nevertheless, those accused are still presumed innocent until and unless actually proved guilty in a court of law. Nonetheless, the publication of their case in the news may negatively affect their family life, professional acquaintances and even future career prospects, even if they are ultimately able to successfully defend against a drug possession charge.

A Gainesville man who allegedly lead the police on a chase is now facing a drug charge. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer was driving west on a county road on a recent Sunday night in late July when he apparently noticed a parked car in an intersection. According to the officer’s report, the car’s headlights were not on.

He says he noticed a man and woman in the car as he drove by, but when the officer turned on his emergency lights, the car headed east on another county road. Three deputies then joined the chase at speeds of up to 70 mph, the officer’s report stated. The 60-year-old male driver eventually stopped, at which point his vehicle was searched; the search purportedly resulted in the discovery of a glass pipe that had allegedly been used to smoke cocaine.  The man was arrested on a drug possession charge, as well as for fleeing police. At last report, he was being held in Alachua County jail.

The accused individual must, of necessity, focus on his defense against this drug possession charge. The prosecution will have the burden of proving each and every element of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. If he has not done so already, the man will likely consult an experienced criminal defense attorney to assist him in pursuing a favorable resolution.
