Teacher and husband arrested, faces drug possession charges

A high school teacher and her husband were recently arrested on drug-related charges. She is now facing drug possession charges, Florida authorities say. The arrest occurred on a recent Wednesday in November.

The arrests occurred after detectives say they uncovered drug activity at the woman’s residence while they were following up on an ongoing search for a wanted felon. The Drug Task Force for Hardee County responded to an Ona residence in order to locate a man with outstanding felony warrants in a different county in relation to Battery on Law Enforcement. It is alleged that the man had fled the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the teacher’s vehicle.

Detectives say they saw drug paraphernalia in plain view; testing apparently resulted in a positive finding for Methampehtamine. Authorities spoke with the woman’s husband, a 37-year-old man, who is said to have admitted to smoking meth earlier that morning. Detectives continued their search and purportedly located more drugs, including 3.8 grams of meth in the bed of the wanted felon and .5 grams in the woman’s purse. The woman and her husband were each charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Methamphetamines as well as Child Neglect, as most of the drugs and drug paraphernalia discovered were allegedly within reach of their 5-year-old child.

The accused individuals are fully entitled to a criminal defense, which includes the right to separate representation by an attorney during the pending legal proceedings in a Florida criminal court. If a conviction is ultimately secured, drug possession charges often come with severe penalties. Nevertheless, neither individual has as yet been convicted of anything and has every right to contest the accusations and the proof on which they are based. Constitutional protections against unreasonable searches and seizures may be a focal point of each defense counsel in preparing a defense for the current accusations.
