Recent investigation leads to 1 arrest for drug possession

Some drugs are necessary for people to maintain their health. However, certain drugs are considered illegal in the state of Florida. The effects of overdosing on these drugs can be very harmful to a person's health, if not fatal. Due to this fact, drug possession is considered a serious offense in Florida with very harsh penalties.

Due to a rise in recent drug overdose cases, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit has initiated an investigation. Recently, this investigation has lead to one man's arrest for drug possession. Specifically, police recently arrested a 32-year-old man on drug possession related charges.

The man was arrested after police officers executed a search warrant at the man's residence in Cocoa. The police officers originally charged the suspect with possession of cannabis. However, during the booking process it was discovered that the man had another drug concealed on his person: cocaine. Thus, he was also charged with introduction of contraband into a correctional facility as well as possession of cocaine.

In Florida, conviction of drug possession charges can result in harsh penalties. These include probation, fines, loss of driving privileges as well as incarceration. However, every arrested individual is deemed innocent in the eyes of the law until proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court, and the prosecution bears the burden of proof. If an individual has been arrested for drug possession, he or she often chooses to consult with an experienced criminal law attorney who commonly handles drug violation cases to help create an effective defense strategy.
