Florida man faces drug possession charges after traffic stop

Florida readers may remember the horrific story of a young man in our state being set on fire. That incident occurred in 2009 when the victim was 15 years old. He was said to have been set aflame by classmates that were mad at him for reporting an attempted bicycle theft. Now, the young man who was the victim of that crime has been charged with crimes himself, including drug possession.

According to Florida officials, the now 18-year-old man was in a white van with three juveniles when he came into contact with police. He reportedly made an illegal U-turn while driving, causing an officer to make a traffic stop. The officer made inquiry into smells that were emitting from the stopped van. This led to a search and discovery of drug paraphernalia, police say.

In fact, Florida officials assert that the young man had marijuana, crack cocaine, a grinder, cigarette paper and other drug-related items in his vehicle. They additionally say that he did not have a valid driver's license when he was stopped. All of these assertions led to the accusations of drug possession and related charges.

The young man, who was so recently the victim of a crime, must now work to defend himself against criminal charges of drug possession and traffic related crimes. To achieve this, he and his representatives may work to review all available evidence, including the details of the traffic stop that led to his arrest. Such information can prove valuable to those in our state who have been accused of crimes. It may additionally be a good idea to work to understand the applicable laws as they relate to the crimes with which an individual has been charged.
